Two Bollywood giants from Chakwal
Madan Mohan (1924-1975) was one of the greatest music directors of the sub-continent while Raja Mehdi Ali Khan created some of the most romantic poetry for Bollywood.
90- minute drive from where I am right now i.e. Islamabad is the city of Chakwal. Two giants of Indian film music who together gave us some of the finest melodies belonged to district Chakwal; Madan Mohan and the lyricist Raja Mehdi Ali Khan (1928-1966). Madan Ji’s grandfather Hakim Yograj was a very famous Hakeem of Bhaun (a small town near Chakwal).Raja Saab on the other hand belonged to Haranpur (a small town near Chakwal).
An ex second lieutenant in the Indian army with no formal education of music, a body-builder with superb sense of dressing and a connoisseur of good food entered into the film world and enthralled everybody with his out of this world compositions.
Naushad Saab, once in a light mood offered everything he had ever composed for just one single composition by Madan Ji; "Hum hain matah-e-koocha-o-bazar ki terha’n" a ghazal from the film “Dastak”.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan(1928-1996)and his wife Tahira, in spite of communal riots in 1947, decided to stay in India rather than migrating to the newly formed Pakistan. Raja Saab worked with both established and new music composers. Madhosh (1950) was Madan Mohan's film with Raja Saab which formed an immortal team. His song Lag ja gale from the film "Woh Kaun Thi" remains one of the top ten all time favorites in film history.
