Dr Nadhra Shahbaz Naeem Khan speaks with The Dawn Newspaper of Pakistan: Before I took up Dr Nadhra’s course at Lahore University of Management Sciences on ‘Getting to Know Pre-Colonial Punjab through Sikh-period Frescoes’, I had this image of Ranjit Singh as some bandit, who looted “our” Mughal buildings and ruled Punjab. I have been her student for a year now and every day I learn to see things from a new perspective. When I started my PhD dissertation on the subject, I failed to find any relevant published or archival work on the subject. All the “desperately needed” material was in Amritsar. Unfortunately, Ranjit Singh’s depiction in our history books has been negatively exaggerated.
Unfortunately this is the reality amongst the masses about the Sikh era of Pakistan’s heritage. There are definitely apockets of people doing great work of discovery but the mass perception is reflected here.
